Position

Stéphane Vial, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Design and a Doctoral Advisor at the University of Nîmes. Succeeding Prof. Alain Findeli, he leads the University’s design research activities in the PROJEKT lab, a research center for social innovation by design.

Author of 5 books, his personal research is concerned with phenomenology of digital revolution, philosophy of design, social design studies and digital social innovation. Stéphane gives various courses both theoretical (philosophy of technology, epistemology of design, theory and methodology of design research) and practical (social design, digital service design, UX/UI design). He has been Head of the Bachelor of Design program for 3 years (2013-2016) and made major contributions to its redesign.

Stéphane is a co-founder and the editor-in-chief of French-speaking design research journal Sciences du Design published at Presses Universitaires de France. He is a member of the Semiotics of Arts and Design research team at the ACTE Institute (Pantheon-Sorbonne University).

 

Biography

Prior to the University of Nîmes, Stéphane Vial was a philosophy applied to design teacher at the École Boulle, Paris, and a part-time lecturer in the Interactive Multimedia Master program at the Pantheon-Sorbonne University, in which he still teaches.

Graduate in Philosophy (M.A.) from Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University and in Clinical Psychology (M.A.) from Paris Diderot University, Stéphane received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Paris Descartes University. He started changing his career to design more than 10 years ago, as he was appointed philosophy teacher at the École Boulle and working in parallel as a free-lance web designer.

Stéphane is the founder and CEO of LEKTUM, a web+graphic design studio dedicated to creatives industries, public sector and non-profit.
